Use Google Assistant with Todoist

OK Google, add “Pick up Anna from school” to my list on Todoist. That’s several keystrokes saved, all thanks to Google Assistant. Use Google Assistant as your virtual assistant to help you find information or get things done. When used with Todoist, you can use your voice or type commands to add or search for tasks, view projects, open sections, and more.

Warning

There’s a known issue with the Google Assistant integration where adding tasks using your voice or keyboard only prompts the question, “Which list do you want to add?” This is because of an issue on Google's platform. Unfortunately, we’ve no control over this, but we’ve reached out to Google and they are working on the fix needed for this to be resolved.

System requirements

Google Assistant is only available in English on Android mobile devices.

Todoist for Android is automatically integrated with Google Assistant. You don’t need to set anything up; you can use your voice or your device’s keyboard to enter commands into the assistant.

Use the integration

To get started, open Google Assistant on your Android device or say “OK Google”. Then, use natural language to add tasks, open projects, or search for keywords in Todoist:

ActionCommandDescription
Add tasks

Add <task name> to my list on Todoist

This adds the task to your Inbox.

Add tasks to a project

Add <task name> to my <project name> list on Todoist

This adds the task to the specified project.

Add a task with a date to a project

Add <task name> <date> to my <project name> list on Todoist

This adds a task with a date to the specified project.

If the project name doesn’t exist in Todoist, the task is automatically added to your Inbox.

Open a project or section

Open <project name> on Todoist

Open <section name> on Todoist

This opens the specified project or section, and shows all its tasks.

If you’re trying to open a section that shares the same name as a project, the project will take precedence and be opened, instead of the section.

Search for a project or section

Look up <keyword> on Todoist

This opens the Todoist app, and performs a search for any project or section that contains the keyword.

Search for a task

Find <keyword> on Todoist

This opens the Todoist app, and performs a search for any task that contains the keyword.

Search for tasks with a date

Find <date> on Todoist

This opens the Todoist app, and performs a search for any task due on the specified date.

Note

When speaking to Google Assistant, Google's Natural Language Processor (NLP) converts what it hears into text. If you're having trouble using voice commands with Google Assistant, get in touch with Google.
